141. 2769 History, Narrative, and Methods of Perspective: Writing the Atlantic Slave Trade.

This paper traces the shifting value systems that have composed the history of the slave trade; this is, therefore, not specifically about the events that occurred during the activity of capitalism and slavery, geographies and cultures. It is about the texts, reading the narratives as methods for writing about history. As such, this paper considers history as a history of its own invention, through the differently constructed narrative accounts that reflect changing social and cultural value systems, and how these have been written in-relation to the activities of the slave trade. 14.5 pgs. 11 f/c. 9b.

142. 3691 Dutch and British Colonial Rulers in South Africa.

This paper discusses Dutch and British Colonial rule in South Africa. It argues that, to a large extent, British colonial rulers allowed greater autonomy to Africans than did the Dutch. This did not mean, however, that they were more humanitarian. Although there were elements of British rule that were certainly less racist and oppressive, the British adopted many of the same attitudes and policies toward Black people as did their predecessors. Nonetheless, the more liberal attitudes, despite their contradictions, provided a foundation for future changes. 5 pgs. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

This paper discusses forced labour in Colonial North America. It discusses how African slaves were transported to the continent from the very early 16th century. Native Indians, however, served as the first slave labourers for colonialists, as European landowners in colonial North America originally met their need for forced labor by enslaving Natives. The paper focuses on the brutality and exploitation that were prevalent in the system at large. 11 pgs. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

This paper addresses the contradiction of slavery and egalitarian politics in colonial America, particularly the arguments surrounding the Virginian economy. These arguments are put forth in Edmund Morgan's classic text on the subject: American Slavery, American Freedom. The essay answers the question: what are Morgan's views on the contradiction stated above? It concludes that historical remove from the events lends us much more perspective on the issue than the slave-owning Founding Fathers. 4 pgs. Bibliography lists 1 source.
